KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - A Kailua-Kona man who ran over and killed his 3-year-old son with a pickup has been sentenced to three months in jail.

West Hawaii Today reports 38-year-old Pedro Johanes Peter also was ordered to pay $1,161 in fines and fees, complete a parenting class, and perform community service by giving presentations on the proper use of child passenger restraints.

Peter in a plea deal last week pleaded guilty to negligent homicide, driving without a license, failure to have no-fault motor vehicle insurance and failure to have child restraints.

Police say the child, Joel Peter, fell from Peter's truck when the boy's sister opened a rear passenger door near a store driveway off Mamalahoa Highway.

Peter drove the child to Kona Community Hospital, which contacted emergency authorities.
