Honolulu mayor to ride bike, talk transportation

HONOLULU (AP) - Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell is going for a bike ride.

Caldwell plans to ride a bicycle through the Moiliili, downtown and Kakaako neighborhoods on Wednesday. City, state and federal officials will join him along with bicycling advocates.

The group will ride along King and Beretania streets as well as Richards and Halekauwila streets.

They'll stop at the site of the future Civic Center rail station in Kakaako to talk about the importance of transportation options.

Honolulu says it's increasing opportunities for safe and convenient walking, bicycling, and access to public transportation.

Caldwell will be joined by Environmental Protection Agency Region 9 Administrator Jared Blumenfeld, Gov. Neil Abercrombie's chief of staff and other government officials. Hawaii Bicycling League members are also participating.
