Arson suspected in sugar cane field fires

HONOLULU (AP) - Maui County fire officials say arson is suspected in eight fires that have scorched sugar cane fields.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports investigators have found no obvious ignition points.

The first fire was May 19 along Holomua Road near Makawao Union Church and the last occurred Tuesday along North Kihei Road near a parking triangle.

Firefighters say the fires have burned 42.5 acres owned by Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. and caused $182,500 in damage to the sugar crop.

Maui fire spokesman Lee Mainaga says drought is making the island vulnerable to brush fires as well as cane fires.
