KALIHI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
A family of four is cleaning up after a fire damaged their Kalihi home. Emergency crews responded to the house on Winant Street just before 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Authorities said the fire appeared to have started in a makeshift cooking area set up in the carport. Their parents weren't home at the time, but two boys, ages 14 and 18, escaped with their pet dog. The intense heat also caused minor damage to nearby homes.
"I felt the heat. We were so close to that fire. I thought that we were done, but just quick feet, out of the house," said neighbor Jonnie Cabrales.
"It was pretty scary. It spread pretty fast. It got roof high. Just a few minutes, it got that high," said neighbor Maurice Arakawa.
The fire mainly damaged the carport and only extended to about 10% of the house. The Red Cross is assisting the family. Damage to the home and its contents is estimated at $50,000. Fire investigators are still looking into the cause of the blaze.
