Schatz urges TSA PreCheck for interisland flights

HONOLULU (AP) - A Hawaii U.S. senator is urging the Transportation Security Administration to expand the agency's PreCheck Program in the state.

Travelers enrolled in TSA's PreCheck program are allowed to leave their shoes on through screening. They can also keep their belts on, leave laptops in cases and carry small amounts of liquids in carry-on bags.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports Sen. Brian Schatz in a letter Monday urged the TSA to include interisland flights in the program.

The Democrat is on the Senate Commerce Committee and a spokeswoman says key stakeholders, including Hawaiian Airlines, are calling for participation in the program.

Hawaiian CEO Mark Dunkerley says in a statement that PreCheck would allow customers to move more efficiently between island cities.

Schatz says it could boost tourism and air travel.
