HONOLULU (AP) - A major Hawaii labor union has endorsed U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz in his bid to keep his seat.
The Hawaii Government Employees Association on Sunday threw its support behind the Hawaii Democrat, with President Jackie Ferguson-Miyamoto saying in a statement that Schatz has "had unwavering support for Hawaii's workers." Ferguson-Miyamoto says that support led to the union's decision to make an early endorsement.
In a statement, Schatz thanked the 42,000-member union and said the endorsement means a lot to him personally. His office says it is the 24th endorsement the senator has gotten as he faces a primary battle with U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa.
The primary is scheduled for August 2014 to fill the final two years of the late U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye's original term. Hanabusa's Honolulu office didn't return an after-hours call Sunday.
