4 survive small plane crash on Maui

WAILUKU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Four people escaped injuries following a small plane crash on Maui, according to Maui Fire Officials.

The crash happened at 5:38 p.m. near Wailuku. The Piper Cherokee was heading from Oahu to Maui and experienced engine problems 3-4 miles away from the Kahului Airport.

The pilot declared mayday and made an emergency landing near Lower Waiehu Road.

Families spotted the struggling plane while cooking Father's Day dinner.

"If he would have landed into that camp, we'd probably see a different story. But we're lucky he didn't land into that camp. Some homeless living in there and they had their gas cans all in that area," said Brad Hosino.

The plane sustained minor damage and all four men on board were not hurt.
