Businessman in Hilo hammer case guilty on all counts

A Hilo businessman was found guilty on all counts Tuesday after he admitted to bashing a man with a hammer.

Robert Diego admitted he bashed Don Nigro in a Hilo apartment in 2011. Diego claimed to have rare coins for sale, and instead of the promised coins he showed up to their meeting with a hidden hammer.

Diego claimed he attacked Nigro with the hammer because he tried to sexually assault him.

Police say Nigro ended up with a fractured skull. Then while Diego was in jail, he allegedly tried to hire someone to kill Nigro.

Diego's sentencing is scheduled for next month.

Diego is the former mortician who served two months in jail in 2004 for theft.
