MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Central Maui drivers got stuck in some thick smoke Tuesday morning due to sugar cane fires.

Drivers were reportedly at a standstill on Kuihelani Highway for more than two hours. The highway closed again for another two hours after noon.

The Hawaiian Cane and Sugary Company is planning another burn from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday along Honoapiilani Highway.

There's also another burn scheduled for Thursday from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. along Kuihelani Highway, and finally one more on Friday from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. along Hana Highway near Maui Country Club.

Cane burning critics have been documenting the health hazards of the smoke, and they are considering a lawsuit. However, according to the Hawaii Health Department, the Hawaiian Cane and Sugary Company meets state and federal guidelines during its harvesting.
