HHSAA approves tourney format change for two sports
The student-athletes may be on summer break, but the work never stops for the state's athletic directors.
The Hawaii High School Athletics Association board approved a format change Monday morning for state tournaments in two division one sports.
The change calls for a state tournament that is spread throughout the neighbor islands.
Beginning in the upcoming 2013-2014 school year, the regional rounds for both girls basketball and boys volleyball tournaments will be taking place on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii island.
Instead of having all the games played in a few days, the tournament would spread out over two weeks.
The semifinals and championship will still be played on Oahu, but officials say the change is a huge benefit for the students.
"You're not going to miss school until possibly the semifinals only, which would be on a Friday and the finals would be on a Saturday," said HHSAA executive director Chris Chun. "So we are talking about, instead of missing four or five days of school to travel to Oahu, you are only going to miss one day, maybe, at the most."
Currently, the change only applies to the two sports, but if successful, the format could be expanded to more programs.
