Posted: Updated:

A metallic graduation balloon is to blame for a power outage that affected nearly 2,000 customers in Waipahu overnight, according to the Hawaiian Electric Company.

Authorities reportedly received word that a mylar balloon was stuck in some powerlines near Paiwa and Waipahu streets at around 2:40 a.m.

Sources at the scene told Hawaii News Now that many houses south of the H-1 freeway were dark, and that stoplights and streetlights, including some of the freeway, had also gone out.

Crews from the Hawaiian Electric Company were able to completely restore power by about 3:40 a.m., and say that a total of 1,770 customers were affected by the outage.

Here are some safety tips from the Hawaiian Electric Company on how to prevent balloon-related power outages during the graduation season.
