HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie is releasing more than $21.8 million for capital improvement projects for airports and highways statewide.

Abercrombie said Thursday maintaining and upgrading transportation infrastructure is essential to island commerce, business and tourism.

The bulk of the money will go to improvements at Honolulu International Airport, including $6.3 million to repave a runway and $2.7 million to replace 12 passenger loading bridges.

Kauai's Kuhio Highway will get $1.3 million to improve traffic flow.

State Senate Committee on Transportation and International Affairs Chairman J. Kalani English says nearly $400,000 for statewide bridge inspection and appraisal is crucial for Hawaii's aging bridges.

He also notes that repaving of a runway at Maui's Kahului Airport is long overdue.
