Body found floating near lava viewing area on Hawaii island

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Big Island police are investigating the discovery of a body that was found floating in waters off Kalapana in the Puna district.

At 6:28 a.m., Hawaii police responded to a report of a body caught in a fishing line from a nearby fishing boat in the ocean off one of the lava viewing areas.

The Hawaii County Fire Department says the body is of a "young female," with a slim build, short brown hair, and a tattoo of "Veritas" on her lower back. Officials say she is 5 ft. 4 inches tall, and is possibly in her late 20s or early 30s.

A Lava Tour boat stayed with the body until divers from the Fire Department and a helicopter arrived, who were then able to retrieve it.

Police have not ruled out foul play. "There's some markings on the body that appear to be suspicious," Hawai`i Police Department Lieutenant Gregory Esteban said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning to determine the exact cause of death.

4 vehicles, including 3 rental cars, were parked in the parking lot for the lava viewing area, which is closed overnight.
