Governor releases $48M for Hawaii public housing

HONOLULU (AP) - The governor is releasing more than $48 million for capital improvement projects at public housing across Hawaii.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie announced this week that nearly $26 million will go toward various public housing program site improvements. Ten million will go toward compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act at various state and public housing projects.

Lanakila Homes in Hilo will get $7.5 million to renovate buildings, including replacing 62 boarded-up and abandoned units built in 1962 so that they can be rented to qualifying families.

Hale Laulima in Pearl City will get $5 million for modernization, roof replacement and termite damage repair. The 36-unit housing project was built in 1981.
