HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A strong earthquake has shaken an area near the Fijian islands, but it was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The quake was measured at a magnitude 7.4, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Officials say the depth of the quake was too deep to create a tsunami threat.

The earthquake happened at 7:19 a.m. HST.
