Located just a few miles from the Hendrick Motorsport's complex and just down the road from Lowe's headquarters, Charlotte Motorspeedway is the perfect spot for Jimmie Johnson to dominate.
With a victory in Saturday night's All Star Race, Johnson moved passed two of his heroes, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Sr., in all time All Star wins.
"To beat Jeff and Earnhardt, two guys I've looked up to my whole life," said Johnson about moving to the top of the win column. "This means the world to me."
In the first four segments of the event, Johnson didn't have the fastest car. That honor belonged to the two Busch brothers, Kurt and Kyle.
"We just didn't get the best pit stop there at the end to get us out on the front row," said Kyle Busch on not being able to take the fastest car to victory in the last segment. "It is what it is. We'll just take this as a good learning day and hopefully bring back some speed like this to the 600."
Johnson just couldn't keep pace but an eleven second pit stop before the final 10 lap segment put his car out front which proved to be the winning move.
"I really didn't think that we would be able to come down pit road and have a stop that fast," said winning Crew Chief Chad Knaus on his teams winning stop. "Man, those guys just absolutely nailed it. My hat's off to them."
Johnson was a little skeptical of his chances gain a fourth All Star title but, knew that his team would not let him down.
"I really didn't think we had a shot at winning tonight," said Johnson after the event. "Every member on this No. 48 team is very proud of what we've accomplished, but we know we've got to keep pushing harder and pushing one another."
That pushing is what put the No. 48 team out front for the final segment and led to a record setting night for Johnson and his team. With his return to victory at Charlotte, Johnson will be the favorite as the series heads into the 600 in a few days.
