Hawaii News Now on Wednesday announced its newest anchor to join the 5 and 5:30 p.m. newscasts. Sports Director, Chris Tanaka, will move from the sports desk to become the new early evening anchor alongside Stephanie Lum.
A familiar face to Hawaii News Now viewers, Tanaka has anchored sports on the 6, 9 and 10 p.m. newscasts since moving to Hawaii in 2011.
Tanaka's move comes after long-time local news anchor, Shawn Ching, announced he will leave the newsroom to concentrate on his law practice. As co-anchors, Ching and Lum led the 5 p.m. show to become the top-rated newscast in its time slot.
"Though Shawn Ching is difficult to replace, we are confident that Chris can fill his shoes on our top-rated broadcasts," said Mark Platte, Hawaii News Now News Director. "In the two years he has been with us, Chris has proven to be a gifted and intelligent anchor who can think on his feet."
