KAILUA-KONA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Two Hawaiian hawks on the Big Island are being treated for gunshot wounds.

The endangered native birds are alive, but injured. Pellets were still lodged in their bodies when they arrived at the Three Ring Ranch Exotic Animal Sanctuary near Kailua-Kona. One of the hawks has a wrist fracture.

Curator Ann Goody says she believes the birds were shot by someone protecting their chickens from being hunted. Goody says the US Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating the case.
