HALAWA (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Hawaiian Humane Society rescued dozens of dogs from the home of a breeder in Halawa on Tuesday afternoon.

According to investigators, 43 Pomeranians were living in filthy conditions, but officials are not pressing charges since she surrendered the animals and is cooperating.

"They were substandard to say the least. It's pretty difficult to see. It's primarily unsanitary conditions and there were dogs just about everywhere," said Keoni Vaughn of the Hawaiian Humane Society.

The dogs range in age from puppies to full grown, and their health varies. The Humane Society said most of the dogs were living in a carport and a storage room. The retired nurse lives in the home with her family. She told investigators that she had a stroke a couple years ago and is now overwhelmed.

"It's much different than your typical puppy mill where individuals breed solely for profit. This woman, as soon as we arrived, reached out to us for help," said Vaughn.

The woman told the Humane Society that she sold a puppy as recently as two months ago for $2,500.

After the animals are examined by veterinarians at the Humane Society, they'll be sterilized and put up for adoption. A few larger dogs that are in good condition are still at the home as family pets. The breeder agreed to follow-up visits with investigators.

The Hawaiian Humane Society is now asking for help from the public to care for the influx of dogs. They are looking for donated supplies such as towels, bowls, unopened dog food and crates.
