UH AD: All men's teams, including football, to be called Rainbow Warriors

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The 'Rainbow' is making a return to Manoa.

University of Hawaii at Manoa Athletics Director Ben Jay announced Tuesday morning that all men's teams at the school—including football—will be known as the Rainbow Warriors, effective July 1.

The reversal comes several months after Jay announced that the school's men's teams would abandon the "Rainbow" identity entirely in all team nicknames and branding, unifying football, baseball and five other sports under the standalone "Warriors" name.

"The decision on February 13 to change the nickname of the men's teams to Warriors has generated a lot of discussion and we have received both positive and negative feedback," Jay said. "We listened to the public discussion and we went back to the original two questions we asked ourselves - who are we and what is representative of the islands?"

That question has, apparently, been answered, to the pleasure of organizations like the University of Hawaii at Manoa Letterwinners Club, which sent a letter to Jay earlier this month asking that he hold off on changing the nicknames of the men's teams.

All women's teams at Manoa will be known as the Rainbow Wahine.

"We initially decided to adopt Warriors as the nickname of our men's teams, since it was used by the majority of our men's programs, including the one with the largest fan following (football)," Jay said in a statement. "This is a very subjective and emotional issue and the only clear consensus on this topic over the last 13 years has been that a decision needed to be made to unify our men's teams under one nickname."

We will have more information on this developing story, including reaction from the University of Hawaii community, tonight on Hawaii News Now.
