Local Connection: Hanabusa vs. Schatz

By: Rick Blangiardi

Here we go again.

A Democrat with a well-known name is challenging another Democrat in a high-profile U.S. Senate race.

No, it's not Ed Case versus Sen. Akaka. It's U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa versus newly appointed Sen. Brian Schatz.

To many in the Democratic Party, it was blasphemy when Gov. Neil Abercrombie selected Schatz, his lieutenant governor to replace the late Sen. Daniel Inouye. Sen. Inouye ad a letter hand-delivered to Abercrombie's office asking that Hanabusa be selected to replace him.

It was also shocking when Case, then a congressman, took on Akaka in 2006. Case lost by nine percentage points and many in the Democratic Party never forgave him. He has not been able to regain office since.

This situation is a little different in that Schatz is still relatively new in his post and Hanabusa poses a serious challenge. However, it also opens up her congressional seat, potentially to a member of the Republican Party.

We support a good vigorous fight for such an important political post. Hanabusa is right that voters should have a voice over who should fill the remaining two years of Inouye's six-year term.

Let's face it, both are excellent candidates and although their political philosophy is similar, it's good to debate the issues and decide who could best carry out Sen. Inouye's legacy.
