Family of missing mother holding out hope she's alive

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Loida Wideman's relatives are observing an anniversary they never thought they'd have to. A full year since their mother and sister never came home.

Last Mother's Day, Wideman disappeared on her way to work as a nurse at a Kapolei care home.  Family and friends spent months searching and passing out fliers throughout Oahu, but found no trace of her.

"It's really, really tough," said Mary Grace De Guzman, Wideman's sister.  "There are nights I can't sleep and there are days I keep thinking of her. I just keep hoping that one day, my sister is going to come back."

Two days after Wideman's disappearance, her ex-husband, Lonnell Wideman, was arrested for a parole violation on an unrelated charge.

He's now in prison in Arizona and police don't consider him a suspect, but Wideman's family thinks otherwise.

"He's an ex-convict, so what do you think?," De Guzman said. "My sister is very kind, very generous, very friendly. I can't think of anybody to do this to my sister, except him."

Missing both parents, Wideman's three son now live with their uncle in Waipahu.

Her oldest son, Caliph, is trying to stay strong for his younger brothers.

"I tell them that one day maybe someday she's going to come home," said Wideman, who is now 12-years-old. "It's really hard to not think about her and try to go through this as much as I can without her."

Tomorrow night Wideman's family will be dropping off her gold Saturn Ion at Lehua Avenue, the same spot where it was found after she went missing.

It's a gesture that relatives are hoping will bring her home.

"My mom believes she just went somewhere and that's why I'm like, hold on to that," De Guzman said.

Both the family and the Honolulu Police Department are seeking details on Wideman's whereabouts.

Anyone with information is being asked to call police.
