HARRISON COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
Two East Texas women have been arrested for plotting to kill a police officer.
According to Harrison County Sheriff's Office, Amanda Smith and Sydney Brook Sides were arrested and charged with solicitation to commit capital murder of a peace officer.
Court documents show that a Hallsville police officer contacted the Texas Rangers after learning that his co-worker's estranged and soon-to-be ex-wife, 24-year-old Amanda Smith, had met with a confidential informant and requested that he kill her husband. Official records show Sydney Sides, a friend of Amanda's was present during the planning meetings for the murder.
The documents go on to say that Amanda Smith provided detailed information about her husband, his position at the Hallsville Police Department, the vehicles he drove and where he was living with his new girlfriend. According to an affidavit, Amanda provided the confidential informant with $150.00 cash "to purchase supplies for the CI to commit the criminal homicide." The affidavit goes on to say that Amanda told the confidential informant that they would receive $5,000 for completing the capital murder when Amanda received her "expected life insurance proceeds."
According to the affidavit, on Monday, May 6, the confidential informant contacted the Hallsville Police Department about Smith and Sides' plans. That same day, the Hallsville Police Department contacted Texas Ranger Brent Davis.
The affidavit goes on to say, on Wednesday, May 8, Ranger Davis arranged a meeting between the confidential informant, an undercover Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigation Agent, Amanda Smith and Sydney Sides. During the meeting, Smith told the undercover agent that she needed her husband killed before the divorce was finalized on May 14, 2013. The affidavit says, "[Amanda stated] that it should take approximately 30 days for her to receive the insurance money proceeds," and would give the undercover agent $5,000 for having her husband killed.
The affidavit says Amanda Smith and Sydney Sides took the undercover agent and the confidential informant on a drive and showed them the approximate location of her husband's new residence in Hallsville.
On May 9, Smith provided the agent and confidential informant a photograph of her husband. "Amanda Smith stated she did not want to pawn any items with the fear that law enforcement would tie her to the murder." According to the affidavit, the undercover agent gave Amanda the opportunity to back out of the plan to have the capital murder of her husband carried out but, she "stated that she wanted to continue with the plan."
According to court records, Amanda's husband filed for divorce in March. The divorce was finalized on in a Gregg County courtroom on the morning of May 14. According to the original divorce petition, the couple married in November 2010 and separated in January 2013.
Bonds for Smith and Sides have been set at $200,000 each.
