Mental exam ordered in attempted murder case

Posted: Updated:

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - A man accused of pushing a Japanese visitor off a Kauai cliff has been ordered to undergo a mental examination to determine if he is fit to stand trial.

The Garden Island reports that 37-year-old Justin Wynn Klein of Kilauea appeared in 5th Circuit Court on Wednesday, where Judge Kathleen Watanabe granted the motion for the mental examination.

Klein has pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempted murder for allegedly throwing the 31-year-old woman off a cliff on Dec. 16, 2012. The woman was critically injured and spent 10 days in the hospital.

Klein was a fugitive for four months before turning himself into police on April 6. He is being held on $1 million bail at Kauai Community Correctional Center.
