Hiker dies on Big Island lava field

BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man was announced dead on arrival Tuesday after he was found on a lava field near Kaplana Gardens subdivision.

Hawaii Fire Department units responded at 3:15 p.m. to a report of a person unable to walk in Kalapana. When they arrived on scene, a friend said the 56-year-old victim was in physical distress on a lava field, but was unable to find him. The two had been hiking all day.

A ground and air search were conducted and the man was found near Kalapana Gardens subdivision. He was transported out by chopper awaiting a medic unit where he was determined dead on arrival.

His cause of death is still undetermined.
