Maui sewer force main breaks; beaches closed overnight as precaution

LAHAINA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Department of Environmental Management officials report that a Maui County contractor broke an existing 20-inch sewer force main around 2 p.m. at a Wahikuli construction site Tuesday.

The spill was brought under control at 7:30 p.m. Temporary repairs were made to the sewer force main, and while a small leak remains, it is small enough to allow the return of the Lahaina 3 Pump Station to full operation.

Since the pump station has been returned to service, it is no longer necessary for Lahaina residents to watch their water usage and may return to normal water use.

Crews report that spills did not reach the ocean, but as a precaution all Lahaina beaches from Mala Wharf to Canoe Beach will remain closed overnight as a precaution.

A spill also occurred over land in Lahaina, but has since also been contained and cleaned up.
