STOCKTON, Calif. - The University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team witnessed a four-run ninth inning by Pacific as the Tigers rallied to beat UH 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at Klein Family Field. Erik Lockwood's walk-off two-RBI single off Rainbow reliever Lawrence Chew completed the comeback as the 'Bows fell to 11-30 overall and 6-12 in the Big West Conference.
The Tigers manufactured all their ninth-inning runs with two outs. After a Connor Blitzer (2-3, 1 R, 1 RBI) single cut the lead to 5-3, Dustin Torchio (3-5, 2 R, 1 RBI) made it a one-run game with an RBI double and left a pair of runners in scoring position for Lockwood (4-5, 1 R, 2 RBI). Lockwood promptly ripped a Chew pitch into centerfield to score Torchio and Jacob Goulder for the gamewinning runs.
Chew (2-2) was tagged with the loss with Tiger reliever Jason Taasaas (2-0) earning the win in two complete scoreless innings of work. Starter Matt Cooper delivered a very serviceable outing for the 'Bows, allowing two runs with four strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings of work.
Pacific (11-31, 4-14 Big West) opened the scoring in the first inning when Gio Brusa (1 H, 1 RBI) drove home Lockwood with an RBI single. The base hit capped three straight two-out singles by the Tigers as they took a 1-0 lead after an inning.
UH tied the game one inning later when Kalei Hanawahine (2 R) scored on an Austin Wobrock (1-2, 2 RBI) RBI base hit. With two outs, Wobrock drove a full count pitch up the middle to score Hanawahine from second and tie the game.
The Rainbows took their first lead with a run in the fourth inning. Wobrock posted his second RBI of the afternoon when, with the bases loaded, he beat out a double play bid as Marc Flores (1-2, 2 R) scored from third to give UH a 2-1 lead.
UH pushed the lead to 5-1 with three runs in the sixth inning. Trevor Podratz (2 H, 2 RBI) Hsingled up the middle to score Marc Flores (1-2, 2 R) and Conner George (1 R), with Hanawahine scoring on Adam Hurley's sacrifice fly to cap the big inning.
The 'Bows next play a midweek game at former Western Athletic Conference rival Fresno State before concluding their road trip at Long Beach State with a three-game Big West series.
