HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers (SHOPO) announced Friday that its membership voted to endorse Senator Brian Schatz for Senate in 2014. The union—which is comprised of four chapters: Honolulu, Maui, Hawaii, and Kauai—has a total membership of 2,900 officers across the state.

"We are pleased to announce our endorsement of Brian Schatz for United States Senate," said SHOPO Board President Tenari Ma'afala. "Brian has been a consistent friend to law enforcement throughout his career. He understands the importance of a strong and well-funded police force that has the resources to protect the people of Hawai‘i. His commitment, his friendship, and the seniority Senator Schatz is already building in the United States Senate are highly valued by SHOPO, and we look forward to continuing to work with him in the years to come."

"I am humbled by the incredible support I have received from the Board and members of SHOPO," said Senator Brian Schatz. "During my time as Senator and Lieutenant Governor, I have always had a close relationship with the members of the first responder community, and with this union in particular. As a community, their work is imperative for our everyday security and for our ability to respond in emergency situations. I thank them for their endorsement, support, and commitment to public safety, and I look forward to working together to provide a more secure future for Hawaii."

Rep. Colleen Hanabusa officially announced on Thursday that she would challenge Schatz for his senate seat in 2014.
