BELLINGHAM, WA (RNN) – A private school decided to flip tradition Friday when administrators canceled classes "due to great weather."
"Yeah! It's a Sun Day today and everyone gets the day off from school," Bellingham Christian's website stated. "Enjoy your day and send me your creative pictures of you playing outside in the sunshine."
Principal Bob Sampson told the Associated Press he wanted to give the 205 students and 22 staff members time to enjoy the weather in often-cloudy Washington. The school never used any days off for bad weather during the school year, so he floated the idea and got the OK from parents and the school board.
"Kids just love the anticipation of sitting around see if school is canceled when it snows," Sampson said to the AP. "You know, we haven't had any snow days, so I thought, `How fun would it be to create that anticipation for kids when it's nice out?"'
The forecast predicts a sunny weekend for the city of roughly 81,000, with high temperatures in the mid-70s.
Sampson also told the AP he would be there Friday morning to make sure everyone got the notice. He said the pictures taken by the students would be used at a school assembly Monday.
