KAANAPALI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - - Maui's world famous onion will be celebrated Saturday, May 4, 2013 at the 24th Annual Maui Onion Festival. The all day event is hosted at Whalers Village Shops & Restaurants at Kā'anapali Beach Resort.
The all day event will feature chef demonstrations and samples, food booths and vendors featuring the Maui onion and local products along with the popular Maui Onion Eating Contest. Among the activities, judges will determine which Kaanapali resort chef will win the Maui Onion Challenge competition which pits their top creative Maui onion dishes against one another. Festival activities are from 9:45 a.m. to 9 p.m. and also include music and entertainment at Center Stage and the Beach Front Lawn. Hawaii News Now reporter, Ramsay Wharton, will emcee.
In addition, top Maui and Oahu chefs are competition in The Maui Onion Recipe Contest including Maui's own Chef Sheldon Simeon of Star Noodle and Top Chef Bravo season ten finalist. Returning winners include Chef Jojo Vasquez, who claimed the top prize last year for delicate dish of Liver with Maui Kula Onions, and James McDonald, celebrated for his upcountry ravioli in 2010. Other participating chefs include Kevin Hanney from SALT, Chris Kulis of Capische, James McDonald of Pacific'O and I'O Restaurants, and Nick Mastrascusa of Ulu Ocean Grill and Sushi Lounge at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. The contest is scheduled at 4:30 p.m. Center Stage.
Kula Maui Onions are said to be the sweetest onions in the world. Authentic Kula onions are trademarked and grown exclusively on farmlands in the Kula district of the Valley Isle.
