Lockdown lifted in Kahuku after police investigate suspicious package

UPDATE at 11:09 a.m.:
The lockdown at several Kahuku schools has been lifted after an all clear was given by police, according to the state Department of Education. 

The Department of Education's tweet reads "Police have given the "all clear" relating to a suspicious package in a Kahuku park. Lockdown is lifted at Kahuku schools. #HInews"

ORIGINAL STORY:
Kahuku schools have been locked down while police investigate the discovery of a possible improvised explosive device at a nearby park, according to Board of Education and Honolulu Police Department officials. 

At approximately 9:00 a.m., the Hawaii Department of Education's official Twitter account sent out the following tweet: "Kahuku schools are on lockdown while police investigate a situation at a nearby park. No access until "all clear" is given."

The Department of Education did not immediately specify which schools had been locked down.

Officials from the Honolulu Police Department confirmed to Hawaii News Now that an S.S.D. unit was on its way to a nearby park to investigate the discovery of a possible improvised explosive device, or I.E.D.

The situation reportedly began at approximately 6:45 a.m., police say.
