State investigating theft of solar panels at park

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - The state is asking the public for tips to help identify people who stole solar panels from a park in Puna over the weekend.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources said Tuesday someone stole newly installed solar panels and electrical equipment at MacKenzie State Recreation Area.

The state is building new restrooms at the site.

The department says park improvements were to be finished this month. But now the new comfort station will be closed indefinitely so workers may complete repairs and install replacements. The department also wants to improve security in the area.

The Hawaii County Police Department and state Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement are investigating the theft.
