HONOLULU (AP) - Farrington High School students are being nationally recognized for their work to ensure fellow students feel safe and are treated with respect regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network said Monday it's giving its Gay-Straight Alliance of the Year award to Farrington.
The organization says the Oahu school's Gay-Straight Alliance student club has brought attention to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students with events like AIDS Walk Hawaii. The club also organized a gay youth bullying awareness day in 2011.
Farrington senior Jonah Saribay says winning the award means a lot, especially since he's dedicated so much time and effort to spread equality and acceptance.
The network will present the award in New York on May 20.
