Family of Kauai stabbing victim speaks

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - The family of a woman who was stabbed to death on Kauai now speaks out while her boyfriend is in jail, facing second-degree murder charges.

The Garden Island reports that 26-year-old Steven Michael Wilson has been charged with killing 21-year-old Kendra Lewis.

Lewis was found dead on Friday in her room at the Kawaihau Sports Villa condominium. An autopsy confirmed that the woman from Anchorage, Alaska who worked as a cook at Olympic Cafe in Kapaa died of stab wounds.

Police said Wilson and Lewis relocated to Kauai from Alaska at the beginning of the year and were living together at the time of her death. He is being held on a $1 million bond.

Her father Mike Lewis tells Hawaii News Now that he is getting ready for a celebration of life on Saturday in Anchorage. He says comfort has come in a unique way.

"I've had my moments and I've tried to grieve and she's absolutely already come to me and told me to suck it up we're Indians and you know they gave us thick skin for a reason, so I already had my daughter visit me and tell me that everything is okay," he explained.

A friend also set up a memorial fund to help cover expenses.

Mike and his son will be heading to Kapaa next week for another memorial service at Lydgate Park.
