Abercrombie formally launches re-election campaign

HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie plans to formally launch his campaign to win a second term in 2014.

The Democrat planned an afternoon news conference on Monday to enter the race.

No major opponents have stepped up to say they'll challenge Abercrombie.

Speculation swirled in political circles that he might face a challenge from U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, but the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee says she has informed them she plans to run for U.S. Senate instead.

Abercrombie won big in 2010 against James "Duke" Aiona, the Republican lieutenant governor. Abercrombie beat ex-Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann in a primary in that race.

Abercrombie served 20 years in Congress before stepping down to run for governor.
