Reports peg Hawaii for multiple movie shoots

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

State lawmakers voted Friday to increase Hawaii's film tax credit by five percent and extend the sunset date from 2016 to 2019.

Hawaii is one of many locations movie makers have to choose from.

"We're constantly dealing with the globally competitive aspect of our business. And when you see other jurisdictions enhancing their credits, it starts to factor in the decision making," state Film Commissioner Donne Dawson said.

The potential increase comes on the heels of reports that major movies Jurassic Park 4 and Godzilla plan to film on Oahu and Kauai.  Dawson said nothing is certain.

"We have to very careful that we respect and protect the confidential nature of what they're doing at this point because they're looking at a lot of different places," she said.

There's also talk that Pirates of the Caribbean will sail to Hawaii to film its next installment. Dawson couldn't elaborate.

"My main objective on behalf of the state, we want to get the business here, and we want to get as much of it here as we possibly can," she said.

When blockbusters do film here it means work for hundreds in Hawaii's film industry, like stage hands, makeup and wardrobe artists.

"Everything that we do in the film office has direct effects on those workers who make their livelihood in film production," Dawson said.

Three bills went before lawmakers this session that deal with the state's tax credit for the film industry.

On the small screen, Hawaii Five-0 moves into season four, the magic marker for TV syndication. And cable reality hit Duck Dynasty pulled in 9 million viewers for its recent show shot in Hawaii.

"It is more exposure, more eyes seeing Hawaii and recognizing on one level that we are an excellent place, a premier production center, and that we're an excellent place for the film industry," Dawson said.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of filmmaking in the islands. If the state does get some of the marquee movie shoots, it could be a very good year.
