Te'o to the Chargers; Manti picked 38th overall by San Diego

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

After not being drafted in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft on Thursday, Punahou graduate and Notre Dame All-American Manti Te'o was selected by the Chargers with the 38th pick on Friday afternoon.

The San Diego Chargers traded up to the No. 38 overall pick to grab Te'o. San Diego gave up a fourth round pick to move up seven spots and grab the inside linebacker.

"It's kind of crazy. As a Polynesian linebacker, you think of Junior Seau," said Te'o.

Te'o's selection ends what many saw as a disappointing first day for the linebacker, especially after initial reports had the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings or the Baltimore Ravens interested in drafting the Heisman runner-up. All three teams passed on Te'o, including Minnesota, who picked three players in the opening round.

"I don't know if these guys know what they just did. They just created like a fire in me. That i haven't felt before."

Despite an invitation to attend the draft in New York, Te'o declined and watched the first round with friends and family on Oahu's North Shore.

There are other players with Hawaii ties that could hear their name called over the next three days. They include Maui native John Lotulelei and former Warriors Mike Edwards, Luke Ingram and Alex Dunnachie and Notre Dame's Robby Toma.
