Hawaii's Manti Te'o not drafted in first round of NFL draft

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Punahou graduate and Notre Dame Linebacker Manti Te'o was not selected in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Initial reports had the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings or the Baltimore Ravens interested in drafting the Heisman runner-up but all three teams passed.

Despite an invitation to attend the draft in New York, Te'o declined and watched the first round with friends and family on Oahu's North Shore.

The Notre Dame linebacker became a tabloid sensation in January with revelations that the girlfriend who supposedly died during the season was actually a hoax. But what probably hurt his draft stock the most centered on football.

Te'o played poorly in a national title game loss to Alabama. Then he ran a slow 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine.

Teams had to weigh that against his regular-season performance, when he had seven interceptions and finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting.

The 6-foot-1, 240-pound All-American was considered a late first-round or early second-round pick heading into the draft Thursday. Now he'll have to wait until Friday, when the second and third rounds are held.

There are other players with Hawaii ties that could hear their name called over the next three days. They include Maui native John Lotulelei and former Warriors Mike Edwards, Luke Ingram and Alex Dunnachie and Notre Dame's Robby Toma.
