LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - A study is shedding new light on great white sharks spotted occasionally in waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands.

The Garden Island reports that the study in the Journal of Marine Biology looks at the population and behavior of white sharks. Study co-author Kevin Weng, of Manoa's School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, says the study found that there were recorded observations of great white sharks in Hawaii waters every month except November.

Satellite tracking studies have previously shown that Hawaii's white sharks are migrants from population centers off California and Mexico. A relatively small proportion of those West Coast sharks migrates all the way to Hawaii, but is rarely seen.
