Man killed in Kalihi assault identified

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office has released the identity of the man who was found beaten to death Friday morning in Kalihi.

He was identified as Jason Oliveros, 20, of Aiea.

Police blocked off Houghtailing Street around 3:30 a.m. after receiving reports of an assault.

Officials say several men were seen chasing a man down near Halona Place. A nearby resident called police when he heard the commotion outside.

"I saw these fellows without shirts, big wooly hair climbing over the guardrail of the highway and then they came down and went over the fence," he said. "There was one guy standing there and these other guys were shouting. There was sort of a bunch and then this one guy was running down that way and he was shouting for help."

Sources say Oliveros was found with multiple stab wounds to his body.

Houghtailing Street was closed for more than four hours while police investigated.

"I pulled out of the driveway and pretty much i looked down at oncoming traffic and it was just loaded with cops," said Desmond Rodrigues, who saw the scene on his way to work. "I seen there was a covered body off on the roadside. I seen the white sheet over it, but I was just rolling as fast as I can."

The two suspects, Asuelu Moananu and Tosoga Vainuupo, were both arrested on Mookaula street within 90 minutes of each other.

Both men are 21-years-old and live in the same complex on Waiakamilo Road.

Police are still trying to figure out how the dispute started, but witnesses say they've never seen anything like that in the area.

"Just the whole demeanor, body posture and all that sort of thing," he said. "It looked like these people were really after, so to speak, blood."

Several men were seen chasing the Oliveros, but the two arrests are the only ones made in the case so far. Both men are being held on charges of second-degree murder.
