No tsunami for Hawaii after large earthquake near Japan

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An earthquake with magnitude 7.2 occurred near Kuril'sk, Kuril Islands at 5:05 p.m. according to the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was at a depth of 6.2 miles.

Magnitude 7.0 quakes or greater are capable of causing widespread and heavy damage.

The earthquake was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.
