HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Hawaii News Now has been awarded two Edward R. Murrow Regional Awards by the Radio Television Digital News Association, the organization announced on Thursday.

The awards, one for ‘Overall News Excellence' and another for ‘Breaking News Coverage' during a tsunami scare on October 27, 2012, are celebrated distinctions that recognize outstanding achievements in electronic media.

"We are so honored to receive two prestigious Edward R. Murrow awards, especially for overall excellence and breaking news," said News Director Mark Platte. "Our staff rises to the occasion on big events such as tsunami warnings and everyday news that effect our community. I could not be prouder of this stellar staff."

Hawaii News Now's Murrow Award for 'Breaking News' comes as a result of coverage on Saturday, October 27, 2012, when Hawaii Civil Defense officials issued a tsunami warning for the entire island chain following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake near the Queen Charlotte Islands off the coast of British Columbia.

The Radio Television Digital News Association has been honoring achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971, saying that Murrow's pursuit of excellence in journalism "embodies the spirit of the awards that carry his name."

Hawaii News Now, along with the rest of the regional winners, will now compete in the national Murrow contest, to be judged during the summer with awards announced in October.
