Hirono: Focusing on families in immigration bill

Posted: Updated:

HONOLULU (AP) - U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono says she plans to focus on family issues as she reviews an immigration bill introduced in the Senate.

Hirono says she looks forward to reviewing details including provisions regarding sibling visas and access to the country's social programs.

Hirono says it's important to support immigrant families to help them succeed in the United States.

A bipartisan bill was introduced early Wednesday by Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York.

The 844-page bill is sparking intense debate on Capitol Hill and beyond.

Some Republicans criticize the bill as amnesty, while some groups on the left say it's unnecessarily punitive.

President Barack Obama says the bill is a compromise that doesn't give anyone everything they want - including him. But he urges the Senate to move it forward.
