Applications now available for 2013 Maui Junior Lifeguard Program

The County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking out a few qualified men and women to take part in their 2013 Junior Lifeguard Program. 

Applications are available from now until April 30, 2013 at the following locations:

  • all County of Maui lifeguard towers and swimming pools 
  • all Parks and Recreation facilities in Hana and Moloka'i 
  • Lana'i Division of Motor Vehicles and Licensing 

The Junior lifeguard pool training program is being offered to all young adults who are 12-17 years of age, but for the ocean training segment participants must be at least 13 years old. 

Applications will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis and participants must be able to pass a 300-meter swim test non-stop within 11 minutes. Parents or a legal guardian need to be present during the swim testing phase of the application process. 

Training of Junior Lifeguards includes familiarizing students with water safety skills, CPR, First Aid, surf and rescue techniques, ocean swimming, paddle boarding, and lifesaving skills. While the program is free, there is a suggested donation of $15, which can be made payable to the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association - Maui Chapter. 

The training will be offered as week-long sessions between June 10 and July 19 from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. daily at various locations on Maui, Moloka'i, and Lana'i. 

Completed applications should be emailed to Ocean Safety Training Captain Cary Kayama at cary.kayama@mauicounty.gov or faxed to the Aquatics Division office at (808) 270-6141. Maui residents can also drop off their application at the Aquatics Division Office located at the War Memorial Gymnasium.
