Hardships won't keep Lindsey from goals

HILO (HawaiiNewsNow) - Na'ea Lindsey has gone through thick and thin to keep his dream of participating in the Stingray body building classic. Mike Cherry has more.

Na'ea Lindsey's daily life revolves around cutting calories and carbohydrates.

"Body building is a mental, physical and spiritual sport," he says.

To keep each one in check, he leads a life of discipline.

"Training I usually wake up at 2:30 in the morning. I go to the gym at 4am. I work out for an hour. Then I go back in the afternoon at 4:30. I usually go to be by 7-8 o'clock."

Right now, that routine is more intense than ever. In less than a week, Lindsey will compete in his third Mr. Stingray Bodybuilding Championship. While the path to his goal remains clear, it wasn't always so. Last January, Lindsey's father in law, Richard Taylor and his girlfriend Trinin Ballesteros were killed in a horrific car accident in Pahala.

"That was one of the things that made me decide that I don't want to do this. I'm done. I'm done with bodybuilding. I gotta support my family. My wife just wouldn't let me you know. She just told me, dad wouldn't want that. He would want you to finish your goal. That kind of gave me the drive," he explained.

But as soon as Na'ea regained his momentum, another accident happened.

"I was on my way to work and tripped over a bed frame and did a complete free fall. Hit my face on this side on the bumper of my car and I literally knocked myself out."

Lindsey was left with nerve damage that's prevented him from working since February.

"I wake up stiff. I wake up in pain. The first thing I do is get on my knees and pray."

In the last week he was rushed to the Emergency Room from over exertion. Doctors have suggested he abandon his dream, but Na'ea won't give it a second thought.

"It's scary. I am scared honestly, I'm not going to lie about it. Because one mistake and i could be paralyzed."

He has fallen a few times but he's bounced right up. He says, "i'm committed to this contest. My family's behind me 100-percent. He has a lot of individuals that love him and he won't let them down.

"That's just my mentality. Once I set my mind to do something. I'm going to do it and there's nothing that's going to stop me from doing it."
