Kalalau Trail closed ahead of potentially heavy rains

HANALEI, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources' State Parks division has closed the Kalalau Trail on Kauai as a precaution in anticipation of flash flood conditions that were to go into effect at 12:00 p.m. on Friday. 

According to the DLNR, hikers are advised to not take the trail since they may find themselves on the far side of streams that may be subject to flash flooding, thus potentially putting themselves and county rescue personnel at risk.

The DLNR advises residents not to attempt to cross flooded streams and recommends keeping to high ground and waiting for the waters to subside.  

Division of State Parks personnel will evaluate the weather conditions tomorrow morning to decide whether to remove the trail closure sign.
