(RNN) -Severe weather warnings lit up weather maps across the southeast U.S. Thursday evening.
A possible tornado was reported on the ground in northwest Lee County, AL on the Alabama-Georgia state border, but the warning has since been canceled.
Thousands across the southeast are without power because of the fast moving storms. Alabama Power reports 4,500 customers are without power, according to its Twitter account. Georgia Power is reporting 8,800 customers are without power, mostly in the northeast region of the state.
One person was killed and five were injured from severe weather near Liberty, MS in Kemper County, where Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency.
The fatality occurred where a steel building was destroyed, and another person was injured. There is damage in other locations along the path of the tornado, as well as more injuries, however, details are still emerging.
According to the National Weather Service, dangerous tornadoes were seen near Macon, MS.
The National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm and tornado watches for the Florida Panhandle, central Alabama, northeast and west central Georgia, central and eastern Tennessee, western and upstate South Carolina and western North Carolina through late Thursday evening.
Cities in Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee reported high wind damage, and two cities in Georgia and South Carolina are reporting golf ball-sized hail.
The severe weather damaged several homes and downed power lines in Notasulga, AL, a city about 12 miles west of Auburn.
Around 50 school systems in Alabama canceled classes in advance of the severe weather.
Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency for the St. Louis area, after the same storm system brought high winds and damage throughout the state on Wednesday.
Hazelwood, MO, a St. Louis suburb saw 24 homes damaged due to a tornado.
Snow and ice hit the upper Midwest, where thousands lost power.
Another tornado also touched down in Arkansas on Wednesday, damaging 33 homes and injuring three people.
According to NWA, a tornado watch remains in effect for southeast Mississippi until 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon, and southwestern Alabama and northwest Florida until 8 p.m.
