Coast Guard searching for possible swimmer in distress off Maui

MAKENA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Coast Guard is searching for a possible person in distress after discovering a loose kayak in the water off Makena Beach on Maui.

The kayak was found at 7 a.m. Monday floating about two miles off shore. The 8 to 10 foot kayak is red and yellow and had no gear on board or clear identification on it.

An Urgent Marine Information Broadcast has been issued to alert mariners to the possible distress. USCG Station Maui is searching for the kayak's owner while fire crews are interviewing people on shore.

Anyone with information about the kayak's owner or possible point of origination is asked to call the Coast Guard at 808 842 2600.
