In their sixth practice of the spring, Coach Gus Malzahn's Auburn Tigers held a two-hour workout Friday morning at the Auburn Athletics Complex practice fields. On hand reviewing the drills were nearly 500 high school coaches attending the 46th annual Auburn Football Clinic, which began Thursday evening.
"Getting close to the halfway point in the practices, in some aspects, we are pleasantly surprised in the way they've picked up new things they have not done before or things we're calling a little differently," defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson said after practice.
"On the other hand, I think we're a long way from picking up missed assignments and staying focused mentally, causing a little breakdown in assignments or fundamentals, and either one of those will get you in trouble. The most pleasing thing is attitude and the most concerning thing right now is our tackling, so that tomorrow will be a huge thing."
"The number one thing we're looking for tomorrow is attention to detail and discipline. Six days in, we're still too inconsistent. You see flashes – that's a good thing – but we've got to have attention to detail in all the little things as far as alignments and execution. On offense, it takes all eleven," offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee said.
"Their attitudes are great and they are trying to do what we ask them to do, but we've got to learn to push ourselves behind what we think we can. Mentally, I'd like to see us get a little tougher tomorrow too."
Auburn will scrimmage Saturday morning at Jordan-Hare Stadium, concluding its second week of spring workouts leading up to A-Day on Saturday, April 20. A-Day is scheduled for a 1 p.m. CT kickoff at Jordan-Hare Stadium. View complete information for all the events surrounding A-Day and purchase tickets at AuburnTigers.com/aday.
