Sacred Hearts Academy Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) team has won the Hawaii State Aviation Challenge and will be competing at the national RWDC on April 19-21, 2013 in Washington, D.C.

This year, the team designed remote-controlled planes using computer technology and developed a business plan to promote their system. The engineering Aviation Challenge required participants to design a small, unmanned aerial system to search for and locate an injured child in the mountains of New Mexico.

Sacred Hearts Academy also competed in the RWDC surface transport competition, where the team earned one of five national RWDC awards for "Teamwork and Collaboration." The award was presented to Sacred Hearts Academy Real World Surface Transport Challenge team for demonstrating extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit, exceptional partnership, respect for teammates, and support and encouragement of fellow teams.

The Surface Transport challenge required addressing environmental concerns, national security, and profit margins for trucking companies focusing on the issue of fuel efficiency. The Lancer transport team developed economic and environmental modification for a "big-rig" tractor-trailer.

The Real World Design Challenge is an annual competition that provides high school students, grades 9-12, the opportunity to work on real world engineering challenges in a team environment.
